Unlike most copywriters, I have a background in information technology (IT) and web development. I have the ability to bring clarity to technical jargon so that the average person can read and understand your sales copy.
I am a trained web copywriter who has written and edited content on several websites over the years for different departments at a university. As an undergraduate I also studied courses in technical writing, statistics, calculus, and computer programming.
As a freelancer, I specialize in B2B email copywriting for SaaS and Cloud Computing businesses. The types of copy I write focuses on lead generation, lead nurturing, user onboarding, increasing sales, and upselling and cross-selling email campaigns.
Crossroads of art and science
I learned my craft from some of the best copywriters and direct marketers at American Writers and Artists, Inc. (AWAI). Their training programs are second to none, and many students have gone on to consistently outperform other copywriters in the industry.
A key takeaway from my training is that copywriting is not only an art, it is also a science. That means making data-driven marketing decisions instead of relying on opinions.
The inspiration for this idea comes from Claude Hopkins and his book Scientific Advertising, which was published in 1923. A legendary copywriter, Hopkins pioneered split testing to improve response.
With the advent of the Internet, testing has become easier and more cost-effective. As a results-oriented copywriter, I help businesses with an online presence learn and adapt quickly to changing markets.
A business man for all seasons
As important as it is to use a scientific approach in marketing and advertising, there is something more fundamental that gives me an edge as a copywriter.
When I attended university, I divided my time between the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Business. Two different worlds with different perspectives.
On the one hand, I learned about human nature by focusing on the humanities and studying great literature.
On the other hand, I learned the basics of business by taking courses in economics, finance, accounting, marketing, and management.
Both of these things — a deeper understanding of human nature and a basic knowledge of business — are essential for a successful copywriter.
