Generating leads and sales isn’t rocket science.
But it may seem an elusive goal for software companies who want to achieve better ROI and higher profits.
As a freelance B2B email copywriter, I am here to “lead” the way (pun intended).
My mission is to help SaaS companies grow their business with smarter email marketing.
You may be wondering who I am and why you should hire me to write your next lead generation campaign. Here is my story.
Down on the Farm
After four depressing years of high school with barely passing grades, Blake Smith was not sure what he wanted to do with his life.
Throughout his twenties, he drifted like the proverbial ship without a rudder. He was a farm laborer for many years, a job with long hours and hard, dirty work. It was as if he was in a state of Purgatory until he was ready for greater things.
The words of Friedrich Nietzsche are apt: “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.”
One day Blake came to his senses and thought to himself, “There must be a better way to earn a living.”
The turning point of his career was his decision to go to college. But his years of hard work on the farm developed in him a strong work ethic that would serve him well during his academic years and beyond.
Given his less than stellar performance in high school, Blake wasn’t sure he would survive college let alone graduate. But he had two things going for him: He had matured over the years and he was highly motivated to succeed.
With many scholarships and awards to his name, Blake graduated with highest honours. During four years of college, Blake managed to make up for the deficiencies of his high school education and excel in his studies.
Although he went to college with the idea of getting a better job, the irony is that Blake ended up pursuing studies that satisfied his love of reading and learning. Preparing for a job became secondary to him.
That’s why he decided to become an English major and minor in Business. Blake also worked part-time in the university library while attending college. That was like having a paid internship with real-world professional work experience while pursuing his degree.
He also gained international experience through a summer study abroad program in Germany. Blake believes that travel is the best education, and he continues to travel to other countries whenever he can.
In the words of Saint Augustine: “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.”
The next chapter in Blake’s life came when he landed a full-time job in an academic library even before he graduated from college.
It was there that he honed his research and customer service skills while working on the Reference and Instruction team. He also developed his ability to manage complex projects.
Later, Blake joined the Web Services team where he was responsible for maintaining the web presence of the University Library. He learned about content management systems and gained experience with SEO, web analytics, and usability testing.
But Blake was not content with being an employee. He had been thinking for years about starting a business of his own. And it was only a dream until one fateful day when he decided to make a leap of faith.
After he graduated from college, Blake thought about going to business school and getting a Masters in Business Administration (MBA). But that idea was put to rest when he discovered The Personal MBA by Josh Kaufman.
With a passion for self-education, Blake decided to teach himself advanced business concepts and skills by reading the best business books on the market. He was able to build on the basic knowledge of business he acquired in college.
But sitting in a classroom and reading books is not enough to learn about business. Real-world experience is required. So Blake set out on his own and started a copywriting business. And in the process, he learned how businesses really work.
Recently, a direct marketer was lamenting the fact that most copywriters don’t know anything about business. And their ignorance is hurting themselves and the people who hire them.
Unlike most copywriters, Blake has the ability to combine business acumen with skill in persuasive copywriting to help companies sell their products and services.
Blake has come a long way from his humble beginnings as a farmhand. He currently works as a freelance B2B copywriter who specializes in writing email copy for SaaS and Cloud Computing companies. He writes promotional emails, landing pages, and other web copy that converts.
